Fry And Parr!

December11

Do you know what fry and parr are? A fry is twice as big as an alevin. When alevin lose their yolk sac it becomes silver and the alevin are now fry. They have teeth, scales and fins. They use their scales as camouflage. If they develop black marks then they are called parr, because of their “parr” marks but not all fry get these.  Then the fry and parr move out of the redd (salmon nest) to find food, like insects, plankton and other fish eggs.  Birds and large fish are predators to the fry and parr. An interesting fact is that fry and parr use their swim bladder for the first time to move in the water.  It helps them move up and down. Fry and parr are important parts of the salmon life cycle!
