Alevin!

December5

The next stage in the life cycle of salmon is alevin.  About 1″ long, alevin have tiny tails and no fin when they hatch, and a yolk sac attached to their belly.  They live in a redd (salmon nest) with rocks and woody debris because they need to hide from predators, like fish, birds, trout and blue heron.  Alevin get their food from the yolk sac, and they grow quickly because the sac is full of nutrients.  An interesting fact that you may not know is that all alevin do not look alike.  Different types of salmon have different looking types of alevin.  Alevin are great to learn about!
